What is Coaching?
Coaching is a partnership aimed at enhancing personal and professional growth. It helps clients discover their potential, set and achieve goals, and provides a space for exploring growth opportunities.
How is Trauma-Informed Coaching Different from Other Coaching?
Trauma-informed coaching is a specialized approach that is acutely aware of the nuances involved in working with clients who have experienced trauma. This form of coaching doesn’t treat trauma but understands how past traumas can influence current behaviors. Coaches in this field are trained in understanding the brain-body connection, client regulation, and the various types of traumas and their symptoms. They learn techniques to help clients regulate their nervous system, mitigate re-traumatization, and navigate emotions like shame and guilt through powerful questioning. Trauma-informed coaches create a safe environment to explore these impacts and support clients to be resourceful.
How Do Trauma-Informed Coaches Support Their Clients?
Trauma-informed coaches support clients by diffusing negative flashbacks and creating new, positive experiences. They help clients give language to their feelings and manage their 'window of tolerance', gradually building their capacity to envision and work towards a better future. This includes fostering post-traumatic growth and awareness of feelings that may or may not serve the client at the time.
What are the Key Techniques Used in Trauma-Informed Coaching?
Key techniques include empathy and compassion, creating and maintaining a non-judgmental space, and actively listening to the client. Trauma-informed coaches are trained to understand what is said and unsaid, recognizing body language and tone variations that are significant for trauma survivors. They focus on building trust, understanding the client’s current state, and believing in the client’s resourcefulness, even when the client may not.
How is Trauma-Informed Coaching Different from Therapy?
Trauma-informed coaching mainly focuses on setting and achieving future-oriented goals, using techniques like grounding and breathwork for managing emotional responses. It's less about treating psychological disorders and more about personal growth. In contrast, therapy delves into resolving past issues and psychological challenges, often involving clinical interventions. Therapists are clinically trained to handle severe trauma and mental health disorders, whereas coaches are not, making their roles and methods distinct.

No, anyone can benefit from trauma-informed coaching. Its compassionate approach and techniques like emotional regulation and self-awareness are universally helpful, regardless of one's trauma history.
